Really nice! I always have enjoyed reading pieces in Thoreau's "Journal" - reminds me a lot of that.

What a delightful IatB! I probably shouldn't mention what a riflebird's song really sounds like. I'll just leave it as 'nice feathers, shame about the voice'.

Thanks Jennifer! You know, the Burroughs quote is from his discussion of Emerson's poem "The Titmouse", which actually refers to a chickadee. Emerson may have been a great essayist, but apparently he couldn't keep his parids straight! The sapsucker myth is very cool, indeed, especially the odd concept (not quoted above) of the strange little naked, featherless sapsucker going about his daily routine before he encounters the elder who grants him plumage.

This really is a terrific edition of IATB. I particularly loved the sapsucker myth and the Burroughs chickadee quote, but the whole eclectic mix of quotes you've found is impressive. It just shows that birds catch people's imaginations, and that there are many different ways of setting that impulse down in writing.

Thank you everyone for reading and for your kind words about the post! I'd like invite you all to subscribe to my feed. I blog as often as possible, but usually not more than about once a week, so subscribing is really the best way to follow the site. Thanks to all of the contributors for their submissions, and thanks to Mike at 10,000 Birds for allowing me to host. It was a lot of work, but fun!

Thank you Dave! I've been enjoying your Morning Porch poems all year... I really should've searched though them for something to include here! Keep up the good work over there.
